Discover: Mountain Island Lake in Charlotte NC. Mountain Island Lake was created in 1924 to go along with the building of Mountain Island Hydroelectric Station. The primary purpose of Mountain Island Lake is to provide drinking water for the residents of Mecklenburg and Gaston Counties. Mountain Island Lake is fed by the Catawba River and is the smallest out of the 3 main made lakes in the Mecklenburg County Area; Lake Norman and and Lake Wylie are the bigger lakes in the area. Mountain Island Lake has about 60 miles of shoreline and is a great place to take your watercraft or fish if you don’t want all the hustle and bustle of a larger lake.
